No other neighborhood in Rotterdam is as changeable as Katendrecht. Where it once was a red-light district, it is a popular destination among city dwellers and visitors today. Culinary enjoyment, an art or theater performance, or simply a good cup of coffee; Katendrecht can do it all, but the best is yet to come. Those looking for more luxury can visit the Rijnhaven District in the future. A real design avenue is being realized here: an attractive, creative neighborhood with a shopping area that is fully focused on international fashion, design, art and architecture. The monumental coffee warehouse Santos is being restored and a residential destination - the German design department store Stilwerk will establish itself here - will be given a partial residential function. The existing Jumbo supermarket will be replaced by an enlarged and completely renewed Jumbo food market of approximately 3000 m². This food market will be located under an approximately 85 meters high residential tower. High-quality catering establishments are created at the Rijnhavenkade with various terraces, greenery and varied paving. To complete the feeling of the Rotterdam metropolis, a luxurious MGallery by Sofitel hotel will be established next to Bay House.
The prestigious range of fashion and design will be a reason for many people from within and outside Rotterdam to visit this district. Premium brandstores like Gassan Diamonds, Rolex, Stilwerk and the couleur locale of the sandwich shop, espresso bar, foreign delicatessen shops and flower shop will make a long-term visit absolutely worthwhile. A broad walking area will be created around the shops and catering establishments, which will probably be partly covered.
Talents of the Rotterdam creative class are constantly on the move in order to find good performing platforms for their entrepreneurial needs. We expect that, due to the presence of Stilwerk, Rotterdam Rijnhaven District will be a new neighbourhood in town where creative entrepreneurs are able to strengthen their business by sharing design studio’s, needs for exhibition in art galleries and create meetings and events in the lounge areas around the district.
Just like the other great design districts in the world art will play an important role within the Rijnhaven District. Several art galleries and two museums will enhance the unique mix of culture, design and creativity. Besides that, art installations will be visible in the public spaces, where visitors and citizens of the area can enjoy them, while art pieces will also be offered for sale at the art galleries in the district.
Rotterdam is the city of events. Rotterdam was declared IFEA World Festival & Event City several times. Also, on and around Katendrecht, popular festivals are regularly organized such as the Nacht van de Kaap, the Kid Dynamite Jazz Festival, the World Port Days and the Ronde van Katendrecht.
The Rijnhaven District will not only add an exclusive range of new homes, shops and restaurants to the city, but also an MGallery by Sofitel hotel. This luxurious hotel is located in the building next to Bay House and will have approximately 200 hotel rooms, a restaurant, (rooftop) bar, terrace, event space and a wellness center. In a later stage, a luxury hotel with approximately 150 rooms will be located in the district.
Living in Rotterdam has never been so attractive. In the Rijnhaven District, housing will be raised to a higher level. The combination of the reign of the new city center and the oasis of tranquility in a luxurious apartment of top quality, is what makes living in the Rijnhaven District so unique. And we cannot repeat it often enough: all this while enjoying a breathtaking view. This is coming home to a new way of living.
